Squirtle

Chapter 1

“Still asleep?” came a voice from across the room, “Aren’t you aware of what time it is?”

Ash Ketchum stirred restlessly, but hadn’t quite woken up yet and didn’t give a real response, to the disappointment of the man standing in the doorway. “If you’d like to sleep in” the man reminded the groggy Ash loudly enough for his point to get across “Then I can always give away my starter Pokemon to somebody else.”

At that the dark haired boy practically sprang across the room, landing right in front of his closet, which was flung open in an instant. Sweaters and shirts began to fly from it before he found exactly what he was looking for; a certain blue and white jacket with some yellow trimming. Not quite aware that he was still wearing nothing else but the loose fitting white t shirt he had slept in, and a pair of blue boxers, Ash threw on the jacket. “I’m ready” he announced, “I’m ready to get my first Pokemon Professor Oak!”

“Okay, okay” the professor chuckled, amused at the boy’s antics, “But since I was able to wake you rather easily today there’s less need to rush than I had expected. Try to get yourself properly dressed for the role of a trainer, and then head downstairs for the breakfast your mother has prepared.

“Yes sir” Ash exclaimed as the professor turned to leave, his white lab coat trailing off behind him and his hand scratching at his gray hair as he laughed to himself.

A long time ago, or at least long from Ash’s perspective since it had occurred before he was born, a certain event had taken place. His mother had been living on her own while his father, who Ash admittedly didn’t know that well since he was always away, was off being a Pokemon trainer. It was during that time, that his mom’s old house had been burnt to the ground.

The fire in question had been caused by a certain Pokemon, namely a Charizard which was a sort of large, orange, fiery lizard. Ash happened to know this particular Charizard in fact since it belonged to none other than the professor himself!

Exactly what had happened was supposedly put behind Delia and the Prof as ‘something that happened in the past’ long before Ash’s arrival in the world, so he didn’t know everything, but he had learned that essentially, Charizard had lost control one day and in a fit of its Blaze ability had burnt the old house to the ground. Since it was pretty much his fault the prof had offered to let Delia stay at his lab while her house was being fixed, and then somehow it had just never got around to being rebuilt at all.

So for the first ten years of his life Ash had found himself calling the Pokemon lab of Pallet Town ‘home sweet home’, and now he would be leaving it. At long last he was going to be a Pokemon trainer, and Ash was ecstatic as he found himself rushing out the back door that led to the field and circling the lab to where he would be getting his first Pokemon.

Ash, as naturally excited as he was, found himself at the front of a line of enthusiastic young trainers who were waiting for their first Pokemon.

Before they were given any, Professor Oak began with a speech about the importance of friendship with Pokemon and with other trainers on their journeys into the world. Ash only half listened, although it wasn’t that he didn’t care, just that he’d heard the speed enough times to know the whole thing word for word already, that was one of the side effects of sharing a house with a Pokemon professor.

Finally though, Ash heard a sentence that he knew came near the end and sure enough the speech was over. Being first in line, there was nothing between him and a new Pokemon!

“Have you made your decision Ash?” the professor inquired, gesturing to three gleaming red and white Poke balls that were on display, as well as to the images behind them of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. “I have” Ash responded, nodding his head and gazing up at the images.

First up was Bulbasaur, a four legged blue-green dinosaur with red eyes that glared from beneath the weight of the plant bulb on its back. Second was Charmander, the very Pokemon that would one day become a Charizard, capable of reducing a house to nothing but ashes being swept away by the wind with little effort. Charmander was orange with a tan belly and brightly burning tail, its eyes were bright green, a difference from the fearsome red of the other starter Pokemon although certainly not one that signified it possessed any less power. Last of course was…

“My choice” Ash beamed “Is Squirtle!” He held out his hand and the professor nodded, taking a Poke ball from a box behind him, leaving the one on display where it was of course since there were plenty of other trainers still waiting, and giving it to him. Ash clutched the Poke ball in delight, and with a hasty word of thanks to the prof, he prepared to run off to somewhere where he could call out his new Pokemon.

Before he had taken more than a step away though, he heard the old man call his name. “Yes?” Ash asked, wondering what he might have done to cause the old man to interrupt the boy who was next in line from choosing his Pokemon, a Bulbasaur apparently, as the boy wouldn’t stop saying it.

“I believe you may have forgotten your hat” the professor told him.

Ash’s eyes darted up and when he saw only his spiky black hair and not the familiar red lip of his usual baseball cap he laughed out loud. ‘Today really got me excited’ he thought to himself, nodding his thanks to Oak before dashing around the building to a side door.

He quickly fished his hat out of the closet and completed his traveling outfit, which also contained the jacket from earlier worn over a dark green t shirt, as well as a pair of jens and blue and white shoes.

“Now let’s meet my Pokemon” Ash whispered, the anticipation almost too much as he tossed the Poke ball forwards to an empty space in the center of his bedroom, releasing his chosen Pokemon.

Squirtle was a tiny blue turtle with a curled tail and red eyes that sparkled as they stared up at Ash with a look of curiosity. Ash grinned and decided the he had picked the right Pokemon, as not only was Squirtle his favourite of the three, but it also had what looked like a very strong shell protecting its back.

“Nice to meet you Squirtle” Ash said, speaking first and offering his hand as a gesture of friendship when he did, “My name’s Ash.”

The little turtle spent another moment looking at him, maybe judging him, before seeming to decide that it liked the human. It accepted Ash’s handshake and from that moment on the two were teammates.

“Hold on!” exclaimed a distraught boy as Ash rounded the corner of the building, hat on his head and Squirtle safely returned to the Poke ball, “You’re saying you didn’t save any Pokemon for me of all people?!”

Professor Oak shook his head disappointedly. “I’m sorry he apologized, but it would be wrong for me to deny a Pokemon to a trainer who had shown up on time in order to save it for one who was late.”

The boy stammered out a string of barely comprehensible excuses as Ash approached and the professor sighed, seeming unsure of what to do. “I suppose you’ll have to wait a full year and simply get your first Pokemon next time” the old man began to say before Ash spoke up.

“Professor” Ash reminded him, “Don’t you have that other Pokemon still available?”

Oak seemed shocked at his lapse in memory of that fact and clapped his hands together in delight. “Yes of course” he agreed, “Thank you Ash! This will be a perfect opportunity to test how suited this species is to being a Pokemon meant for new trainers, and I couldn’t have selected a better person for the job.”

He rummaged through one of the deep pockets of his coat and pulled out a Poke ball. “Here you are” Oak said, beaming at the boy. “I proudly present you with this starter Pokemon, Pikachu!”

The boy accepted the Poke ball, nodding his thanks as he did and the professor smirked. “You were lucky I still had that one here” he pointed out, “Although next time you might not be so lucky so you should try to get here on time.” Ash stifled a chuckle at the ‘wake up on time’ lecture that he’d heard many times before and Oak continued. “It seems that Ash’s tardiness may be rubbing of on you, eh Gary?”
