One day a boy was sitting at a bus stop in the rain. As he stood there with his pink umbrella and doll sitting on his shoulder, he noticed a girl approaching him. She then stopped a couple feet away from him, looking towards the street perpendicular to her. She was a little shorter than the boy, looked a little younger too, and she had a black umbrella. She looked over at the boy. “Hello.” She said nicely. The boy looked at her. He then looked away quickly, afraid to make conversation. “Umm…how are you doing?” The boy turned his head towards her, and, feeling that she might be a good person, responded. “I’m alright. How are you?” He said, quite shyly. “I’m doing okay. This rain doesn’t seem to end.” She said, looking off into the distance. She was right—the rain didn’t seem to stop, even miles away. She eyed the boy’s pikachu doll resting on the boy’s shoulder. “Nice doll.” She commented. “Thank you.” The boy replied, looking down at the ground. “Nice umbrella. Black is a cool color.” “Haha thanks, say, why is that Pikachu resting on your shoulder?” The girl asked curiously. “Because it’s my companion. I take it wherever I go.” The boy said, a little proud of his stuffed partner. “How long have you had it?” “About 3 years.” Talking about his Pikachu seemed to make the doll happy.” He then looked at her. She really was a nice girl. “I don’t know what I would do without it.” He said, as if trying to think of what he would do without it. The thought of losing the doll saddened him, and he set it aside to think of something happier. “Well,” said the girl, “Why do you have a pink umbrella? Sorry if that’s a stupid question or something.” “Oh no, not at all. It’s my neighbor’s. I don’t have one of my own, so they lent me theirs.” The boy said. He looked up at the trees. “I’m glad most of the rain is only hitting the trees and not us.” “Yeah, they’re pretty big, so they should protect us for the most part.” She smiled. Suddenly the bus came. “Well, this is my bus, see you later.” The boy waved to her as she disappeared inside the bus. The next day… The boy was at the bus stop as usual, waiting for his bus that wasn’t likely to come for some time. Just like the previous day, the girl returned a little before her bus came. This is what he had hoped for. “Hello there.” He said, greeting her this time. The girl looked a little surprised, but returned the greeting. “The rain is a bit heavier this time, I noticed.” The boy looked a little cold aswell. “Yeah, I have to agree. Well, luckily my black umbrella is keeping me dry.” She smiled. “Yeah, and my umbrella too” He said, “And each other.” “And your Pikachu doll.” The girl said, smiling, “Don’t forget that.” “I didn’t. Why would I?” The boy said, again feeling positive because of his conversations with his newfound friend. “Good point.” The girl said. Neither said a word for some time. Eventually the girl’s bus came, and she boarded a second time, leaving the boy and his doll alone again. A gust of wind picked up and blew the doll off of his shoulder. The boy scrambled to pick it up immediately after it landed on the wet sidewalk. For the next couple of days the girl didn’t show up at the bus stop. But one windy day she came back, but even that didn’t lighten the boy’s mood. “Hello.” The girl said. Then, taking a closer look at the boy, noticed that the Pikachu doll was missing. “What happened to your Pikachu doll?” The boy didn’t want to look at her. He didn’t want to speak to her. Then a period of silence followed. Eventually, the boy spoke. “Yesterday I walked home because I didn’t make it to the bus on time. I was walking by the river near my house when a gust of wind blew my Pikachu doll off of my shoulder and into the river. I tried to catch it before it fell in, but it was out of my grasp, and I couldn’t just jump into the river like that when it was raining. I was afraid my clothes would get wet and that I wouldn’t make it out after.” “Wow…that sucks…” The girl said, speaking softly. “NO! It doesn’t just suck! I lost my partner! My only friend!” The boy burst out in rage. “That’s not true. You didn’t lose me.” “Whoever said you were MY friend!?” The boy yelled at her. This scared the girl, who almost teared up. The boy noticed this and turned away, looking at the road to his right. Neither person spoke to each other. Eventually the boy turned to the girl and apologized. “Its okay, I understand how you feel. I almost lost my umbrella the other day.” The boy didn’t respond. “My friend…it sounds weird but I loved that doll. Maybe I should have jumped into the river for it. Then none of this would have happened.” “You did what you thought was right at the time. Don’t blame yourself for it.” “I can’t help but do just that.” The boy said. Suddenly a powerful gust of wind blew the pink umbrella out of his grasp and flew away. The boy tried to run and catch it, but it flew much too fast for him to catch up. He then walked back to where he originally was, put his hands in his pocket, and looked down solemnly. The girl couldn’t believe the bad luck this boy was having recently. The bus came once more, and the girl got on, asking the boy if he wanted to join her. He declined the response, and looked up on last time at the door closing and the vehicle moving in the opposite direction of whence it came. |
