Ugh the copy/pasting screwed up the tabs and stuff that made this look all fancy Anyway. This, like the other story I just posted, was from my Creative Writing class from last year. The assignment was a screenplay, obviously. I wanted to go sci-fi again, but, as I said in the other discussion topic, that well had already been pretty well tapped. So instead of trying to come up with a original concept I just decided to expand on an existing sci-fi 'story' - Coulton's song. (I was in the middle of a giant JoCo phase at the time of writing. I regret nothing.) Was really impressed with how this came out, considering I had never tried my hand at a screenplay before. Was fun to read, because we had different people in the class read different parts, and a girl I liked was reading for L.A.U.R.A., while I took the role of the main character, who had been obsessed with the real Laura. It was an interesting sort of duality, I guess. One thing I would change if I did this again/had more time (deadlines are the bane of my existence) would be to add a little prologue, corresponding to the first verse of the song, depicting the real Laura's spurning and subsequent humiliation of Edgar, just so when L.A.U.R.A. was describing the event later on in the story it would make sense. Again like the other story, I would like to expand on this, at least a little: maybe not to full movie length, but at least a short film type of thing, playing out the events of the rest of the song - the Robot War, etc. That said, I have no problem with leaving it where it's at right now...I don't know if I have the creativity to continue the story from that point at a similar quality to what's already there. |

I liked it, for the most part! I don't know much about writing screenplays, but it was interesting and fun to read throughout. The end totally reminded me of the Cybermen from Doctor Who, haha (I know you know what I'm talking about =P). In any case, I think it would be cool to see something like this as a short film. If you ever get the chance, I say go for it! |

Funny thing is, I didn't get into Doctor Who until this summer, after I wrote the screenplay. But yeah, I definitely see the Cybermen thing in the ending, looking back at it. |

Yeah haha. I just read the lyrics for the song it was based off of and I can definitely see where the influence came from. I think it was a really neat idea to base it off of, especially since I'm into a lot of sci-fi/sciency stuff. =) |
